Anne Redpath wrote in 1961 that Studio expressed ‘quite a lot of what I seem to be … trying to do with my painting’:
I shall never be … an abstract painter because I like my ‘things’ too much to lose them altogether ... my own problem, as I see it, is using the excitement I feel about the colour and texture and shape of things as a point of departure into something that is almost abstract and which is therefore a more absolute and permanent beauty than a mere representation could ever be.
