The only name inscribed by the Berry studio on the negative of this double portrait is 'Gower', but it is easy to tell the brothers apart. When Gerald Gower was medically examined just before he attested for service on 1 March 1917, his height was recorded as 6 feet 4 inches (1.93 metres). Alfred's height when he was examined on 23 April 1917 was recorded as 5 feet 9 inches (1.75 metres). Standing proudly upright side by side, Gerald is clearly the taller of the two.
