Overview
Gottfried Lindauer’s painting of Ana Rupene and her child has become an iconic image in New Zealand art.
Lindauer, a Vienna-trained artist, arrived in New Zealand in 1874 and quickly became famous for his portraits of Māori leaders and personalities. This painting remains one of his most celebrated. Lindauer made up to 30 versions – one of which won a gold medal at the 1904 World’s Fair in Saint Louis, United States.
The painting is based on a photograph of Ana Rupene Whetuki, also known as Heeni Hirini, of the Ngāti Maru iwi (tribe), which was taken at the Foy Brothers’ studio in Thames in the 1870s.
