Overview
Photographing Bone Stone Shell
The Bone Stone Shell catalogue featured 12 black-and-white portraits of the exhibiting artists by photographer John Daley (1946–2012).
The local environment is strongly present in the photographs: Michael Couper stands against the diagonal strata of a rocky outcrop, his bare feet in the sand; Eléna Gee sits in front of a towering pile of driftwood. Whether at the beach or in the studio, the artists are clearly ‘at home’.
Daley’s use of light and texture captures a sense of place, creating a visual link between the New Zealand landscape, the artists portrayed, and the natural materials they were drawing on.
