Overview

This brooch was made to commemorate a 'Ladies' Cricket Match and Garden Party' held at Wellington College on 19 November 1902 to raise money for survivors of the Elingamite shipping disaster. 45 people died as a result of the shipwreck on Three Kings Islands on 9 November 1902. It was one of the worst early 20th century maritime disasters in New Zealand, and happened because the Three Kings Islands were incorrectly charted.

The Mayor of Wellington presented silver fern leaf brooches to the cricket players, with the following inscription engraved on the back: 'Elingamite / Presented by the Citizens of Wellington'. The brooch was similar in design to those worn by members of the South African contingents at that time.
