Overview
This scenic plaque is a souvenir of the 1953-4 Royal Tour. It is based on a widely-circulated photograph of the royal yacht as it departed New Zealand from Milford Sound in 1954, after a highly successful tour of the country by Queen Elizabeth II.
Typical of commercial souvenirs that celebrate New Zealand's scenic beauty, it was produced by a English firm that specialised in character wall masks and plaques featuring English scenes (starting with the 'Beautiful Britain' series in 1948-9).
It shows the trans-national circulation of imagery, as W H Bossons produced plaques of other iconic New Zealand scenes and elsewhere.
